What Exactly Is Reverence?
If you revere something, you place it above yourself. You have a respect for this thing, or more likely, this person. You may even be in awe of this thing/person.
I’m awed by the ability to climb into a machine that has the power and technical capabilities to actually fly in the air. Flying is truly awesome. But this is nothing compared to the awesomeness of the One who made the air and the earth, put into place the rules of physics that hold it all together, and maintains order in the universe.
Even more awesome is the fact that the God of this universe has given me the gift of love. In more ways than one.
First, He gives to me his love in the form of saving grace. That is, even though I don’t deserve it, he has made a willing sacrifice of His son to bring me close to Him. That’s love, that somebody would lay down their life for us.
Second, He has given me the ability to love. To love Him. To love the people close to me, and even love those who are unlovable. And isn’t that what He does for us? Love our unlovable selves?
If you truly appreciate the power and love of One who can do these things, you are beginning to grasp reverence.
